Cover Letters

This week, in class, we discussed cover letters. The cover letter is a crucial part of a résumé. It is the first thing the employer sees when reviewing your application. In other words, the cover letter is how you introduce yourself to your employer. It gives you

“the opportunity to tell prospective employers who you are, showcase why they should hire you, and stand out above all the other candidates.”

An outstanding cover letter is key to assuring employers that you are the right candidate for the job.

Cover letters should be concise, so it is no surprise that writing a cover letter is a tricky task. After all, no one said convincing your employer that you are the best person for the position in less than a page is easy. However, there are simple ways to improve the quality of your cover letter despite the limited length you are given. For example, make sure to only emphasize your strengths and beneficial attributes. Highlighting your weaknesses and lack of experience will only hurt your chances of getting hired. Another guideline for writing a cover letter is that when you provide your employer with your qualifications, back your qualifications up with examples. Sharing an experience that proves why you are qualified for the task will make what you say more believable and increase the likelihood of the employer choosing you.

Cover letters are a key part of your job application and should not be overlooked. Take advantage of the cover letter! Tell your employer what you will bring to the job. Do not ask if you will be good for the job, declare that you will be. Use your cover letter as a way to guarantee to your employer that you are the best person for the job.
